When Your Sister Gets Engaged...

What else are you supposed to do except a weekend engagement session in one of the most beautiful places in Michigan? We already had a camping trip planned for Memorial Day weekend in Marquette, so we made an engagement session weekend of it!

About the Couple

Anna is my youngest sibling, and my dearest friend. We met Philip when he sat behind our family at church on his first visit almost 3 years ago. Anna and Philip got to slowly know each other through various young adult activities at our church, and in January 2024, Philip asked her out. From there the rest is history. In April of this year they got engaged and will be married at the end of August. Anna is a people person, extroverted, kind, caring, and joyful. Philip is introverted, thoughtful, dad-joke extraordinaire, and an engineer. Both of them have a love for the outdoors and adventure, so Marquette felt like the perfect place to do their engagement session. The picture above is from a backpacking trip they took in 2024 to the Porcupine Mountains.

Day 1-Presque Isle

After doing a little bit of research, I knew Presque Isle was the place to go. The Black Rocks are there and the shoreline of Lake Superior is unmatched. When the day dawned is was cloudy, which turned out to be for our benefit! It made everything look moody and some spots I felt like we on the coast of Ireland! We hiked multiple miles, climbed rocks, and found some absolutely amazing spots, not only on the Black Rocks and coast, but in the woods as well.

Day 2-Dead River and Wright St. Falls

The second day we wanted to find waterfalls. That day ended up being much warmer and sunnier. We had researched Dead River Falls the night before and headed there first. Once there we found that there were a number of steep climbs to get where we wanted to go, which we decided to forgo for safety reasons. We found a really nice patch of woods for a few photos, and headed off to find other falls.

Wright St. Falls

We looked for alternative waterfalls and found Wright St. Falls. To reach the falls we hiked along the Noquemanon Trail near the power plant. It was a beautiful hike and the waterfalls were beautiful too. It was hilarious trying to give directions while water is rushing nearby. I had to yell a lot and even then most of the communication was through head nods and thumbs up. But we got some really cute photos.

This was such a fun weekend. To do this for my sister and her fiancée was an honor. I love creating memories for people, and this is one memory I'll carry for a long time. I won't be behind the camera for her wedding, which is as it should be. I'm looking forward to celebrating her future as a Mrs. with her and so many of our family and friends as her Maid of Honor. Which means I'll be in front of the camera for once! It's a big change for our family, and I'm excited for this next step in her life. Here's to the future Mr. and Mrs. Heistand!
